Founder's Message

Dear Friends,

Twenty years ago, I never imagined that a simple Christmas ride through the streets of Saintfield would become a journey that would change so many lives — including my own.

In 2007, the Saintfield Christmas Charity Ride was born from a simple desire: to bring people together at Christmas and use our shared love of horses, community and generosity to help those in need.

Over the past two decades, together we have raised tens of thousands of pounds for vulnerable communities in Uganda and for a wide range of charities and good causes here in Northern Ireland. Every pound raised has been made possible by the incredible generosity of our riders, volunteers, sponsors, local businesses and supporters who have faithfully stood with us year after year.

What began as a local fundraising event has grown into one of Northern Ireland's most treasured Christmas traditions. Every December, hundreds of riders dressed as Santa fill the streets of Saintfield with colour, laughter and festive spirit. Yet behind every smile, every hoofbeat and every Santa suit is something far more important — the opportunity to bring hope, practical support and lasting change to people who need it most.

For many years, the Ride proudly supported Rock Ministries Northern Ireland Trust, helping orphaned and vulnerable children across Uganda. We witnessed children receive an education, families gain access to clean water and healthcare, and communities begin rebuilding their futures.

One of the most unforgettable moments in those early years was welcoming the Mwamba Children's Choir to Saintfield in 2007 and again in 2009. Their songs, their faith and their incredible resilience touched every heart. Many of those children had experienced unimaginable hardship, yet they stood before us with joy, hope and a determination to make the very best of their lives.

At the time, none of us realised that among those young singers was a boy whose story would one day become part of our own.

Today, I have the privilege of working alongside Pius Kulama, a former member of the Mwamba Children's Choir and one of the young people whose life was positively influenced through the support made possible by this charity.

Pius understands, perhaps better than anyone, the difference that compassion and opportunity can make. Having overcome tremendous personal challenges, he has dedicated his life to giving back. Together, we now share a vision of transforming his home village of Kabumba in Uganda by tackling the root causes of poverty and creating opportunities that will allow families to thrive for generations.

For me, this is one of the greatest testimonies to what the Saintfield Christmas Charity Ride has always been about.

A child who once stood in Saintfield singing with hope has returned years later as a partner, a leader and someone determined to help others. It is a beautiful reminder that when we invest in people, they go on to change the lives of countless others.

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of travelling to Uganda to visit the projects we support and to spend time with the communities we serve.

Nothing prepares you for what you experience.

I met mothers determined to provide a better future for their children despite enormous challenges. I met hardworking farmers striving to provide for their families. I met teachers educating hundreds of children with very limited resources. I met young people full of ambition, eager to learn, work and contribute if only they were given the opportunity.

Above all, I met people filled with dignity, resilience and hope.

Seeing these communities with my own eyes transformed my understanding of what this charity has achieved over the past twenty years. It reminded me that behind every donation is a real person.

A child receiving an education. A family drinking clean water. A patient accessing healthcare. A farmer increasing their harvest. A small business beginning to grow. A family discovering hope again.

Every rider, every volunteer, every sponsor and every supporter has played a part in making these stories possible.

Twenty years have taught me many lessons.

They have taught me that kindness has no borders. That generosity inspires generosity. That ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things when they come together with a shared purpose.

They have taught me that lasting change is built patiently and faithfully — one person, one family and one community at a time.

That is why our vision has grown.

Today, together with Pius and our trustees, volunteers and partners, we are helping to develop the Kabumba Model Village — a long-term vision that brings together quality education, healthcare, enterprise, agriculture, clean water, affordable housing and community development into one sustainable model.

Our ambition is not simply to relieve poverty.

Our ambition is to help communities overcome it.

We want families to become financially independent. Children to receive an excellent education. Young people to discover opportunity. Farmers to prosper. Small businesses to flourish. Communities to thrive with dignity, purpose and hope.

It is an ambitious vision.

We know it will take many years to achieve. It will require careful planning, dedicated volunteers, committed partners and significant financial investment.

It will take a lot of faith.

It will take a lot of hard work.

It will take a lot of money.

But over the past twenty years, I have learned never to underestimate what God can do through ordinary people with generous hearts.

If a small Christmas ride through the streets of Saintfield could grow into a movement that has raised tens of thousands of pounds, supported charities in Northern Ireland, transformed lives in Uganda and brought together communities across continents, then I truly believe this vision is possible.

I believe the best chapters of our story are still waiting to be written.

As we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Saintfield Christmas Charity Ride, I don't see this milestone as the end of a remarkable journey.

I see it as the beginning of an even greater one.

To every rider who has saddled up on a cold December morning...

To every volunteer who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes...

To every sponsor and local business who has supported our vision...

To every donor whose generosity has changed lives...

To every family who has stood along the route, cheered us on and believed in what we do...
